Convento de Cristo earns a commission when you book through a link or widget on this site. You pay the same either way. That arrangement is worth setting out properly here, because on this monument it produces an unusual result: the thing this site is most sceptical about is also the thing it gets paid for.
How it works
Every booking link and widget here goes to GetYourGuide, which sells the listings. If you book after arriving from this site, GetYourGuide pays a percentage of what you paid. The price you see in the widget is the price on the platform: nothing is added for arriving through this door, and no code, account or click of mine changes it.
The uncomfortable part, stated plainly
The platform’s plain ticket listing costs the same as the operator’s own counter, about fifteen euros. If you buy it through a link here, I am paid a percentage of a ticket you could have bought at the door for the same money. That is not a markup and this site will never call it one, but it is a reason to be suspicious of me, so here it is in writing on the page where you can see it.
It also cuts the other way. That listing is the lowest-rated thing in this catalogue at 3.9, and its review page says so at length, prints the reviews that raise the castle closure, and points readers at guided listings instead. Those pay more. I am not going to claim that is heroic. What I will say is that the incentives here do not require anybody to be dishonest, which is not true of every site in this trade.
What is not paid for
Nothing on this site is a paid placement, a sponsored review or an advertisement. No operator has seen a page before it was published, no operator has been offered the chance, and no company is named anywhere. The order listings appear in is the order the catalogue is grouped in — what gets you inside, and what does not — not the order that pays best. The pages about the building, the Templars and Freemasonry earn nothing at all and are most of the site.
Reviews are quoted verbatim from the platform, including the four-star ones and the complaint about a castle being shut. If you find a quotation here that has been trimmed to flatter, tell me and I will fix it that day.
